Dakar is preparing to take a new step in the modernization of its public transport network with a major restructuring project. Estimated at 267.8 billion FCFA, this ambitious program was unveiled during a Regional Development Committee (CRD).
Led by the Executive Council of Urban Transport of Dakar (CETUD) in collaboration with the Road Works and Management Agency (AGEROUTE), the project aims to improve urban mobility in a sustainable and inclusive manner.
This project, called “Restructuring of the Public Transport Network” (RTC), plans several major achievements by 2026 with the creation of 14 new bus lines and modification of 11 existing lines.
Added to this is the deployment of 400 buses, capable of transporting 465,000 passengers every day and the development of 30 kilometers of roads and the construction of nine strategic intersections to streamline traffic.
This work promises to transform the travel habits of Dakar residents, by offering a more accessible, rapid and environmentally friendly network.
The first phase of the project, which began on May 30, 2024, is expected to be completed at the end of 2026. It will directly impact nearly 3,000 people living on the routes of the new lines. Support measures will be put in place to minimize the social inconvenience linked to the redevelopments.
The main objective of this project is to resolve recurring congestion problems and allow the inhabitants of Dakar to benefit from reliable and efficient public transport. In addition to the recent successes of the Regional Express Train (TER) and Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), this program is part of a global vision of modernizing urban infrastructure.
