Ange Postecoglou, manager of Tottenham, gave news of his midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur, victim of a worrying malaise during the match against Liverpool (1-0), Wednesday in the semi-final first leg of the League Cup.

Concern gripped the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Wednesday. In the 6th minute, Rodrigo Bentancur (27) collapsed to the ground after trying to take a corner from Pedro Porro. As the action continued, the midfielder remained limp on the ground after some leg spasms. Several players (Porro or Radu Dragusin) then rushed in his direction when others, like Alisson Becker, urged the medical services to quickly take care of the Uruguayan international (67 caps, 3 goals) .

He suffered a violent blow to the head last August

The former Juventus player was placed on oxygen on the pitch. He left the field with a thumbs up and to the applause of his supporters after an intervention of around ten minutes. At the end of the meeting, Ange Postecoglou gave some news about his protégé, refusing to go into too much detail.

“I don’t want to talk, all I know is that he was conscious,” said the Australian technician. “He was taken to the hospital. It’s not my business, it’s not fair to the people around him. It was a head injury.”

The player forgot a story on Instagram to give reassuring news. “Everything is fine guys, thanks for the messages,” he wrote before addressing his teammates. “Congratulations on the win, guys.”

This discomfort comes a few months after a violent head shock suffered by Bentancur in an aerial duel with Issahaku Fatawu, during a match against Leicester, in August. The player fell knocked out face down and was taken to hospital to be examined. He missed the following match against Everton but returned to the competition two weeks later.

Bentacour, at the club since 2022 and his transfer from Juventus, played his first match of 2025 on Wednesday after missing the one against Newcastle for accumulating yellow cards. He returned to competition at the end of December after serving a heavy suspension of seven matches for a racist remark against his teammate Heung-min Son. “Do you want Son’s jersey? Or his cousin’s? Anyway, they all look more or less the same,” he said in June on Uruguayan television. He was also fined 120,000 euros.
