RSC Anderlecht will host Club Brugge on Sunday on a completely renovated pitch. The lamentable state of the Lotto Park pitch had been a problem for several months.
In Anderlecht, the condition of the pitch is a problem that is not new. And recently the pitch had deteriorated further due to winter conditions, forcing the club to take action. After the final match of 2024 against Dender, the top layer of the pitch was completely removed.
This week the RSCA began installing a new 7,000 square meter completely natural lawn. The operation is carried out by FlexGrass, a Swiss company which was also responsible for the grounds of the San Siro Stadium and Juventus.
An expensive and only temporary solution, but inevitable
The new lawn was produced in Turin and transported to Belgium. The replacement costs the Brussels club 300,000 euros and aims to allow the team to finish the season in better conditions. However, Anderlecht stresses that this is only a temporary solution.
This summer, a larger investment is planned: the installation of a hybrid lawn. This blend of natural grass and synthetic fibers provides added strength and durability. The fibers are embedded deep into the soil to allow natural grass to grow around it.
The hybrid pitch, which will cost €1 million, is expected to offer a structural solution to recurring pitch problems at Lotto Park. In the meantime, Anderlecht hopes to be able to finish the season safely with the current pitch.
