Sean Higgins, who was facing two counts of causing death by vehicle and two counts of manslaughter, rejected a Crown offer of 35 years in prison. He was also charged with failing to stop at the scene of a fatal accident and attempting to tamper with evidence.
This means that the case will go to trial.
If convicted after a trial, Higgins could face more than 40 years behind bars. He is expected to return to court on February 4.
Higgins allegedly hit the two men after carrying out a dangerous maneuver while overtaking on the right while completely drunk. The two victims were riding their bikes at the time of the accident.
The driver admitted to the police that he had drunk “five or six beers”, some of which were at the wheel of his vehicle, a few minutes before the event.
