Didier Lamkel Zé and the Jupiler Pro League, it’s a love-hate story that is never really over. The most talented enfant terrible of recent years will make his return, this time in Sint-Truiden.
Like Captain Haddock’s plaster, Didier Lamkel Zé always comes back, through the door or through the window. The Cameroonian winger left the Jupiler Pro League in August 2023, for good this time, we thought, after a half-hearted stint at KV Kortrijk and a loan at Wydad Casablanca.
Having left for Turkey, Lamkel Zé found pleasure there under the colors of Hatayspor (3 goals and 3 assists in 16 matches) before a brief spell on loan at FC Metz, where he played 9 Ligue 1 matches. This season, he played for Fatih Karamgürük, in Turkish D2, and had 3 goals and 3 assists in 10 matches.
But Didier Lamkel Zé is unmanageable and a few weeks ago, we learned of the termination of his contract, which leaves him free to commit wherever he wishes. Quickly, the rumor sent him to Belgium (read here), and this seems to be confirmed.
According to information from Sacha Tavolieri, the former enfant terrible of Antwerp could well bounce back in Sint-Truiden. The Canaries are looking for offensive reinforcement, because behind Adriano Bertaccini, Felice Mazzù lacks men capable of making the difference.
It remains to be seen whether the whimsical Cameroonian, whose enormous qualities we know, will be the right choice for STVV. Mazzù is a coach renowned for his human qualities, and Didier Lamkel Zé has never been better in his career than under coaches who showed him love – this was the case, especially, under Laszlö Bölöni. A winning bet?
