KRC Genk finished 2024 as Jupiler Pro League leaders. During this first half of the season, several Genkois were able to stand out.
In October, Matte Smets was able to celebrate his first selection for the Red Devils. The defender was even able to make his debut against Israel a month later.
Heynen
Johan Boskamp nevertheless believes that other Limburgers should be called up to the Red Devils, starting with Bryan Heynen: “It’s incredible that he’s not still international,” he says.
Heynen, 27, has come close to being summoned several times in the past. He was on the reserve list for Euro 2021 and for the 2022 World Cup, but he was ultimately left behind each time.
Today, the competition for his position is enormous. We can therefore wonder if he still has a chance of being called up despite his good performances with Genk.
Karetsas
Boskamp also spoke about the very young Konstantinos Karetsas (17 years old): “Karetsas must be summoned quickly, otherwise he will slip through the fingers of Belgium and play for Greece. I hope that the scenario we experienced with Bilal El Khannouss will not happen again. Things must be different with this kid. He must play for Belgium.
At the moment, Karetsas does not yet know which country he will represent in the future. He still leaves a little time before making his final choice.
