Cayden Primeau is going through a difficult period in his career. After showing flashes of potential over the past few seasons, the 25-year-old goaltender has been unable to establish himself consistently within the organization.

His inconsistent, if not execrable, performances this season led the Canadiens to make a difficult decision: place Primeau on waivers. This maneuver, although common in the world of hockey, opens the door to a possible claim by another team, which would mean a radical change in his career.

Primeau, selected in the 7th round of the 2017 draft, has often been seen as a long-term project, but the Canadiens now seem to want to favor other options to solidify their net. The situation reflects the challenges many young players face in an ultra-competitive league.

If another organization decides to claim him, it could offer Primeau an opportunity to restart his career elsewhere, in a different environment, perhaps with less pressure. However, it would also mark the end of a chapter with Montreal, a city where he grew up as a professional and where fans hoped to see him become a mainstay of the team.

That said, we have targeted a few teams that might be interested in him.

Blue Jackets

Elvis Merzlikins, despite a good start to his career, has displayed very ordinary stats for three seasons. Moreover, his substitute Daniil Tarasov is really not convincing. Tarasov is the same age as Primeau. It would not be impossible that Don Waddell decided to shuffle the cards by giving Primeau a chance.

Hurricanes

The Hurricanes are doing well and despite the loss of Frederik Andersen, they have Pyotr Kochetkov to take over as starting goaltender. What they need is a backup goalie.

Dustin Tokarski, Spencer Martin and Quebecer Yaniv Perets have all had the chance to demonstrate their skills so far, but there has been nothing very convincing. With a glaring lack of goal depth behind Kochetkov,
Primeau might just be their best option.

Flyers

Since the loss of Carter Hart, the Flyers have been looking for themselves in goal. No goalie seems to be able to get the job done. Whether it’s Kolosov, Fedotov or Ersson, one of the three could give Primeau his place if Daniel Brière considers it worth it.
