The online encyclopedia, the fourth most visited site in the world, is accused by the boss of Tesla of conveying progressive ideas and erroneous information.
«Wokepedia!» In yet another outburst on his social network want to provide objective information. “Stop giving to Wokepedia until they restore balance to their editorial authority”he wrote.
The sources of this call for a boycott are the recent publication of Wikipedia’s annual budget report, by the Wikimedia Foundation, a non-profit organization which hosts the encyclopedia online. Thus, out of a budget of 177 million dollars collected, thanks in particular to donations, 31.2 million were allocated over the year 2023-2024 to an objective “equity”. “We deeply believe that to succeed, we must focus on the knowledge and communities that structures of power and privilege have left behind. (…) To achieve our vision, we must raise awareness and build trust with the people we need to help us close our equity gaps”explains the Wikimedia Foundation on a page dedicated to the word “equity“. In 2022, the organization had already committed to financially supporting contributors wanting to create more pages for women or sexual minorities, as reported in a survey by the Figaro .

“Why does the Wikimedia Foundation get so much money?”
This is not the first time that Elon Musk has attacked the encyclopedia, which any Internet user can modify by citing reliable and substantiated sources. In October 2023, he had already asked: “Have you ever wondered why the Wikimedia Foundation gets so much money? It’s certainly not necessary to make Wikipedia work. You can literally fit a copy of the entire text on your phone! So what is the money for?”
Accusations that the founder of the Wikimedia Foundation, Jimmy Wales, continued to debunk, explaining that the encyclopedia was neutral and would remain as such. Despite the billionaire’s attacks, Wikipedia remains the fourth most visited website in the world, with seven billion visits each month. As many Internet users will be able to read, about Elon Musk on his page, that he “facilitates the return and spread of conspiratorial discourse”and that some of its “statements” “are disinformation (…) sexism and racism”.
