Spanish justice announced on Friday that it had rejected FC Barcelona’s request to register its midfielder Dani Olmo in La Liga, with the club having until December 31 to find a solution, failing which its star could leave the club for free.
The Barcelona Commercial Court “rejects the precautionary measures requested by FC Barcelona and therefore cannot register the player Dani Olmo for the rest of the season, according to a decision rendered on Monday. It is understood that the player’s contract expires on December 31, 2024 and cannot be extended.
FC Barcelona had taken legal action to be able to register its flagship recruit of the summer because La Liga had refused to do so, arguing that the club exceeded the limit of what it was authorized to spend on salary given its income. The club, in debt, had registered Olmo until December 31 with 80% of the salary of injured defender Andreas Christensen thanks to an exception allowing clubs to replace players absent for a long period.
La Liga welcomed the court’s decision, considering that authorizing the registration of Dani Olmo could “seriously alter the equality of conditions of competition rules”. Spaniard Dani Olmo, European champion, is under contract until 2030, but a clause allows him to leave Barça if his club fails to register him in the league.
Possessed from RB Leipzig for a check for 55 million euros, the Spanish attacking midfielder has established himself as a key element in Hansi Flick’s squad, with 6 goals and 1 assist scored in 16 games.
Dani Olmo, 26, born near Barcelona, was trained in the youth categories of Barça before leaving to play in the Croatian and German championships. He fully contributed to Spain’s Euro victory in July before returning to sign for his boyhood club.
