Victor Wembanyama was voted Western Conference Player of the Week on Monday. A first in the NBA career of the 20-year-old Frenchman, in good shape with San Antonio.
This is perhaps the first of a long series. Like every Monday, the NBA announced the winners of the player of the week trophies, one for the Eastern conference and the other for the West. Cade Cunningham (Detroit Pistons) received the award in the East while in the West, Victor Wembanyama was chosen by the American League.
The Frenchman shone during the two San Antonio Spurs matches last week, two victories against Atlanta (133-126 after overtime) and Portland (114-94). Wembanyama thus displays averages of 36 pts, 6.5 rebounds, 4 assists and above all 7 blocks over these two matches. This is the first time in his career that “Wemby” has won the player of the week award.
Defender of the year at the end of the season?
Wembanyama, 20 years old (he will be 21 on January 4), is in his second season in the NBA. The Olympic vice-champion is in the race for the defender of the year trophy after being the runner-up to his compatriot Rudy Gobert in 2024. The Spurs, 9th in the West in a pinch (15 wins, 14 defeats) , are in the race for the playoffs after a little more than a third of the season played.
