The staff of the Montreal Canadiens and the camp of defender David Savard have not had any discussions about a contract extension.
This is what TSN hockey expert Pierre LeBrun said in his most recent segment Insider Trading.
“There are no discussions between the management of the Canadiens and Savard's representatives for a potential one-season contract extension, none of that. So, it seems to be his last year in Montreal,” he stressed.
The 34-year-old veteran could become an unrestricted free agent on the 1stis next July. This season, he ends a four-year agreement that allowed him to earn $3.5 million annually.
LeBrun also believes that the arrival of right-handed guard Alexandre Carrier in a trade spells the death knell for Savard. The Habs obtained his services on Wednesday by trading defenseman Justin Barron to the Nashville Predators.

The newcomer, six years younger than Savard, is under contract until the conclusion of the 2026-2027 campaign.
“We know what the Canadiens' defensive brigade should look like in the fairly near future. We will see players like David Reinbacher and Logan Mailloux have a full-time position in Montreal. They make a little space here, but they also bring experience with Alexandre Carrier and that could help them make progress,” indicated LeBrun.
The journalist also believes that the CH will not trade Savard at any price between now and the trade deadline, but that it is still a possibility.
