The acquisition of Alexandre Carrier is important for Montreal. Kent Hughes managed to bring some experience to his defensive brigade, which sorely needed it.

However, the team could rejuvenate itself on the blue line between now and the trade deadline.

TSN’s Pierre LeBrun explained in the segment Insider Trading Thursday that he expects this to be David Savard’s last season in Montreal.

In fact, LeBrun is even convinced that Savard will not complete this season in a Canadiens uniform. According to him, we should expect the veteran defenseman to be traded to a competitive team by the trade deadline.

However, this potential transaction will not happen in the coming days. LeBrun understands that Montreal wants to benefit from the experience of several defenders in Savard, Carrier and Matheson as long as possible to help the development of young people.

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about Savard’s potential departure by the trade deadline. Marco D’Amico Responsible Gambler recently stated that the Quebec defender will undoubtedly be traded by the Habs.

Savard’s current contract will expire at the end of this season and at $3.5 million, he could be an interesting target for several teams. We can also say that Kent Hughes has never been afraid of withholding salary, which can weigh heavily in the balance.

The Canadiens could also have tried to extend Savard’s contract for an additional season, but LeBrun said there were no discussions for such a contract between the CH and Savard’s camp.

Trading Savard could be a good idea to accumulate even more draft picks or prospects, but it is the young people who will lose a mentor for the end of the season if the Quebecer leaves.

Denis Gauthier thinks it’s better for Savard to stay in Montreal because the Canadian already has enough draft picks. He seriously thinks that adding another one would not serve as much as keeping Savard as a mentor.

Gauthier would, however, be ready to let Savard go if the return contains a first or second round pick.
