It’s probably the worst kept secret in Montreal: Kirby Dach disappoints.
We knew it was going to be a long time before we saw him regain full fitness… But at the same time, seeing him be so inconsistent on the ice is disturbing.
And that’s normal. When a player labeled top-6 doesn’t produce, we usually hear about it!
The idea of sending him elsewhere has gained ground in recent weeks because ultimately, the Canadian must maximize his value. Because if Dach will never be able to become the player we think he can become… We might as well trade him for something in return, right?
That’s the mentality of some people right now, at least.
In Buffalo, there is another young player who is not living up to expectations and that is Dylan Cozens. Dany Dubé notably proposed exchanging Dach for Cozens last night on the radio (98.5 FM) because the two guys seem to need a change of scenery… But in the eyes of Eric Engels, who was visiting Sick Podcast, a transaction like that is impossible.
And it’s because of the salary:
Eric Engels a raison.
And here’s why: Dylan Cozens still has five years left on his contract (after the current season)… And he earns $7.1 million per season.
That’s a lot of money for a guy who disappoints and it’s a lot of contract years for a guy who doesn’t meet expectations.
On the other hand, Dach receives a salary of $3,362,500 annually and his contract ends in the summer of 2026.
It wouldn’t be so complicated to fit Cozens’ salary in place of Dach (by adding another player in the transaction)… But the problem is finding room to fit Cozens’ salary until the end. of the season until summer 2030.
Caufield, Slaf, Suzuki, Guhle… These guys are already making a lot of money and in the coming years, Lane Hutson will be added to this group.
What I mean by that is that the idea of acquiring a versatile player like Cozens is interesting… But at the same time, it would take miracles to fit his contract onto the CH payroll.
That’s what’s complicated.
In burst
– This young person could very well play in Montreal in 2025.
– Several recruiters at the Bell Center this evening.
– Good question.
– I’ll put it back here.
– Big deal in the Bronx.
