Auston Matthews scored his ninth goal of the season in overtime, Anthony Stolarz blocked 38 shots and the Maple Leafs erased a deficit to defeat the New Jersey Devils 2-1 on Tuesday in Newark.
Matthews took advantage of a breakaway to make the red light shine and the Maple Leafs avoided a third straight defeat. It was Matthews’ 13th career overtime goal. Only Mats Sundin, with 14, has done better in team history.
Pontus Holmberg scored shorthanded midway through the third period to tie the game. Ondrej Palat had previously opened the scoring for the Devils in the second period.
Jacob Markstrom surrendered twice on 16 shots in the loss.
