With a furtive passage of two matches and twenty minutes in the NBA in mid-November, Cam Spencer is having more fun in the G-League. 53rd choice of the last Draft, the Memphis player was injured during the preseason and this explains his start to the season which started after the others.
He quickly made up for lost time since the “two-way contract” has just scored 51 points for the Birmingham Squadron in the victory of the Memphis Hustle. Yes, 51 points at 18/24 shooting including a huge 12/15 at 3-pts. Cam Spencer finished one field goal away from the G-League record, held by Tyler Harvey (2019) and Brady Heslip (2014).
On certain shots, there was even Stephen Curry, notably on the 11th, in the last quarter, which he took almost two meters behind the line and after having raised the ball.
Will he be the next “two-way contract” of the Grizzlies to find a place in Taylor Jenkins’ group, like John Konchar, Vince Williams Jr, GG Jackson and Jay Huff before him? In the meantime, he has done well, which nevertheless remains quite far from the best performances and the historic record in the G-League.
Two years ago, we remember that Nik Stauskas scored 57 points, which was “only” the 6th highest total in a game. The record is still held by Russ Smith, author of a 65-point game in March 2016.
