Sergio Conceiçao has been free since the end of his successful adventure at FC Porto. And he could well offer himself a very unexpected return to one of his former clubs!
In 7 years at the head of FC Porto, Sergio Conceição (50 years old) has won numerous trophies: three Portuguese championship titles, four Cups, a League Cup and three Super Cups. With such a record, some already imagined him coaching the biggest European clubs.
But Conceiçao has been free since last June, and he has not yet found a challenge. He was notably cited at Olympique de Marseille, where it was ultimately Roberto De Zerbi who took charge. Here he is now mentioned in one of his former clubs.
To everyone’s surprise, it is in fact, according to West Franceat… FC Nantes that Conceiçao could make his comeback. President Waldemar Kita, to whom he was very close, would have started discussions to bring the Portuguese back to Loire Atlantique.
It would be a huge blow for Nantes, which is 17th in Ligue 1 and fighting to stay. It was already in comparable circumstances that Sergio Conceiçao arrived in 2016, working miracles and saving the Canaries from relegation. A performance which earned him a return to Portugal through the front door, heading to FC Porto.
It would certainly be a very romantic challenge for the former Standard assistant coach to take on. Last summer, some Liège supporters had daydreamed about a return of Conceiçao to the banks of the Meuse; certainly, Waldemar Kita has resources that Matricule 16 does not have, but maintaining in Ligue 1 is certainly not what we would have expected of the Portuguese today…
