A Lincoln discovered in a pond: the disappearance of two New Yorkers solved 44 years later?

Local authorities in Georgia may be close to solving a 44-year-old double disappearance after a car was discovered at the bottom of a pond.

Officers with the Glynn County Police Department discovered human remains inside the Lincoln Continental they found at the bottom of the water on Friday, CNN reports.

This unexpected find reportedly prompted officers to empty the pond in order to investigate.

According to Glynn County police, this could finally help solve the disappearance of a New York couple dating from 1980.

“The vehicle is similar to the description of a vehicle Charles and Catherine Romer were believed to be driving when they were reported missing in April 1980,” the police department wrote on its social media accounts.

44 years ago, the New York couple were returning from a vacation in Florida when they disappeared. The pond where their Lincoln was discovered is along Highway 95, very close to the hotel where Charles and Catherine Romer were staying.

According to CNN, authorities have not confirmed who the human remains belonged to.

Moreover, it was an anonymous call concerning a 1970s Ford sedan seen in the body of water which first led the police to carry out a search last week. A second vehicle, the 1979 Lincoln Continental, was then discovered.

A resident reportedly told a local station associated with CNN that “a police officer said there were two bodies in the vehicle.”
