The Washington Capitals acquired goaltender Logan Thompson from the Vegas Golden Knights for the 83rd pick in the 2024 draft and a third-round pick in 2025 on Saturday.

Thompson had a 25-14-5 record, 2.70 goals-against average, .908 save percentage and one shutout in 46 games with the Golden Knights this season, going 2-2 (2, 35; .921) in the playoffs.

The goalie was taking part in an autograph session for Las Vegas fans just an hour before the trade was announced.

“It’s special,” admitted the main person concerned. I had never been traded before, neither in the juniors nor in the pros. It’s a whirlwind of emotions. All I’ve known since I entered the NHL is the Golden Knights. It will be different.”

Signed by the Golden Knights in 2020 as an undrafted player, Thompson has a career record of 56-32-11 (2.67; .912; 4 WP) in 103 games (95 starts).

“I did well during these four years,” he analyzed. I will miss it. I don’t really have any bad memories of Vegas. This team gave me my first chance and allowed me to win the Stanley Cup. Las Vegas will always be a second home. »

The Capitals traded goalie Darcy Kuemper to the Los Angeles Kings for forward Pierre-Luc Dubois last week. Charlie Lindgren took over as Washington’s No. 1 goalie during the season.

“We had the opportunity to get our hands on a quality goalkeeper. We had no choice,” said general manager Brian MacLellan.

Thompson attended the Capitals’ development camp in 2018 and 2019, then played for the South Carolina Stingrays, their ECHL affiliate, in 2019-20.

“You try to stay away from social media, but you still see rumors. I’m not necessarily surprised by this exchange. I’m happy to come back to Washington. This is where my career began. I still have good relationships with people there,” concluded Thompson.

With the 83e overall pick, the Golden Knights have set their sights on goaltender Pavel Moysevich of SKA St. Petersburg.
