Formula 1 | Piastri angry with FIA over turn 6

Oscar Piastri spoke after qualifying in Austria after the McLaren driver crossed the track limits on his final fast lap and lost his third fastest time.

The Australian loses big and drops to 7th place on the Red Bull Ring grid for tomorrow’s race.

“For me it’s embarrassing for the FIA.”

“We did all this work for track limits, we put gravel in some places, and I didn’t even go off the track. I stayed on the track. It was probably my best turn six and the lap is gone.”

“I don’t know why they spent hundreds of thousands of dollars trying to change the last two corners when there are still corners where you can go a little too far out before you actually hit the gravel. It’s a shame.”

“But, anyway, everyone kept their F1 within the limits and not me. That’s how it goes.”

When asked to clarify what he means by “embarrassing,” he adds:

“It was probably the best turn six I’ve ever taken. I was right on the limit of the track, I think that’s what everyone wants to see.”

“Again, we’ve put a lot of effort into trying to get rid of those track limits issues. There’s no reason why that corner should be a track limits issue, especially when you stay on the track, like I did, and not on the gravel.”

“So yeah, being the only one it happened to, I’m probably saying it more openly now, but I think it’s embarrassing to see us push to the limit of what we can do and for one more centimetre I’m in the gravel and completely ruining my lap anyway. And it gets deleted despite that.”
