NHL: Philadelphia Flyers buy out Cam Atkinson’s contract

Philadelphia Flyers general manager Daniel Brière announced that the team will buy out Cam Atkinson’s contract.

The veteran had a final year of contract at a salary of $5.875 million. Atkinson signed a seven-year, $41.125 million deal with the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2017.

This contract buyout will allow the Flyers to save a little over $3.5 million next season according to the specialized site CapFriendly. They will however have a penalty of a little over $1.7 million in 2025-26.

“When it comes to someone with Cam’s accomplishments and character, this was an exceptionally difficult decision to make,” Briere said in a statement.

“Throughout his time with the Flyers, Cam has demonstrated an incredible work ethic and level of professionalism that reflects well on him as a player and a person. I have witnessed firsthand the amount of effort, dedication and perseverance he has put into an incredibly difficult rehab process in order to come back and be a leader for our team on and off the ice.

“I want to thank Cam for everything he has done to elevate our team. Cam will always have a place in the Flyers organization and we wish him and his family all the best.”

Atkinson, 35, finished his time in Philadelphia with 36 goals and 42 assists in 143 games.

Buffalo garde Clague

The Buffalo Sabers have signed defenseman Kale Clague to a one-year contract. The two-way deal earns him a salary of $775,000.

The 26-year-old athlete will be back after playing three games with the team during the last campaign. He also played 42 games with the Rochester Americans in the American League. He collected three goals and 20 assists during his stay with the farm club.

Before Buffalo, Clague also played for the Montreal Canadiens and the Los Angeles Kings.
