tornadoes, storms, hail… Apocalyptic weather threatens Germany-Denmark this Saturday

Several German media, citing meteorologists, are concerned about the weather forecast for the day of the round of 16 between Germany and Denmark in Dortmund on Saturday. Severe thunderstorms, tornadoes and hail are expected.

Dortmund alert! While Germany and Denmark must face each other this Saturday at 9 p.m. in the round of 16 of Euro 2024, the German press echoes the apocalyptic weather forecast for the Ruhr city that day , ranging from severe thunderstorms to potential tornadoes. What to postpone the meeting?

While Germany has been trembling so far due to the injury of Antonio Rüdiger, who will finally be fit for the round of 16, it is finally the bad weather that could play a trick on the Mannschaft. “From Saturday evening to Sunday evening, there is a risk of violent thunderstorms from the southwest and west to central Germany,” explains meteorologist Dominik Jung in the newspaper Bild.

Intense downpours before Türkiye-Georgia

“This could be accompanied by extremely heavy rainfall, with amounts of between 40 and 80 litres per square metre in a few hours. Hailstones with a diameter of around three centimetres are also expected, as well as powerful gusts of wind with speeds of between 100 and 140 km/h. Tornadoes are also not excluded.”

Climatologist Karsten Brandt from Donnerwetter.de adds: “There is a risk of severe weather with 50 to 80 l/m² of rain. The game on Saturday evening could be quite stormy. Let’s hope there will be no extra time, because later in the evening the risk of heavy rain increases.”

The German weather service is expecting violent thunderstorms this Saturday evening and Sunday evening, which will reach the southwest and west of central Germany from France. This is not the first time that Dortmund has made headlines for its weather, since the Blues had experienced a peak of heat there against Poland, when the roof of the Signal Iduna Park had already suffered leaks after intense downpours during Turkey-Georgia.
