Euro 2024: Slovenia finishes third in its group because… of a member of its staff

Completely crazy situation this Tuesday at Euro 2024 where we had to look far to decide between Denmark and Slovenia. Ultimately it was the cards that made the difference, even if, apparently, both teams received 6 yellow cards.

Denmark and Slovenia finished tied on points (3) in Group C after three draws. To decide between them and know who would finish 2nd and 3rd behind England (5 points), it was necessary to use the fair play classification, i.e. the number of cards received during the competition.

The 1-1 split between the two teams on June 16 in Stuttgart and the others signed against England and Serbia led to a record of 2 goals scored and as many conceded for the two teams.

The next criterion was the fair play ranking. On the surface, the two teams seemed equally equal with 6 yellow cards on each side, but one detail made the difference. Indeed, a member of the Slovenian staff received a yellow card during the match against… Denmark, obviously. And it was this cardboard that made the difference. No trace of this card was visible on the statistics sheets and even on the UEFA website, which explains the confusion in the press in recent hours.

This member of the staff should not, however, blame himself, because if he had not received this card, it was the ranking at the end of the qualifications which would have decided between the two teams, and here again, it is Denmark which passed in front of the Slovenes.

Ironically, Denmark and Slovenia were already in the same group in qualifying and had already finished level on points. But this time, the Danes’ victory in the first leg had made the calculations easier.

This is very important for the Red Devils who could face Slovenia if they take first place in Group E this Wednesday evening.
