Despite a draw against Serbia on Tuesday (0-0), and a “perfect” tie with Slovenia, Denmark validated its ticket for the round of 16 of the Euro by finishing second thanks to a very particular criterion.

The outcome of Group C is far from offering a festival of goals. After two 0-0s, England, Denmark and Slovenia qualified for the round of 16 of Euro 2024. The Danes and Slovenes, who separated in a draw on the first day (1 -1), finished with a “perfect” tie in terms of points (3), overall goal difference (0), number of goals scored (2) and the same number of yellow cards (6). According to article 20 of the UEFA regulations, one criterion ultimately decided between the two teams: the results of the qualifiers.

The victory of happiness

Placed in the same qualifying group, the two teams also finished tied (22 pts), but the Danes finished at the top of the qualifying group on the particular goal difference (2-1 victory and 1-1 draw against Slovenia). Denmark therefore finishes second in Group C behind England, and will face Germany in the round of 16 of the Euro on Tuesday in Munich.

Slovenia is also guaranteed to see the round of 16 for the first time in its history in a major tournament, which eliminates Luka Modric’s Croatia in the process.
