The players of the German national team have reportedly decided to donate a large part of their bonuses from the 2024 European Cup to an association helping the homeless, as revealed by the newspaper Bild.
It’s been a while since Manuel Neuer’s teammates received any bonuses. Having performed poorly for several years, the Germans have not received a single euro in the last three tournaments. In great shape this year, and hosting Euro 2024 on their home turf, the Mannschaft players will this time be able to collect a sum at the end of the competition.
According to the local daily, the national team captains Ilkay Gündogan, Joshua Kimmich and Thomas Müller did not discuss the bonus with the German Football Association (DFB) leaders before the start of the tournament. The scale was decided by the DFB leaders in recent months.
Players will donate money to foundations
By qualifying for the round of 16, the players would have received 50,000 euros each. A satisfactory sum which will increase if the team manages to climb to the European summit in the coming days. The German Federation would have set the following bonuses: 100,000 euros for participation in the quarter-finals, 150,000 euros for the semi-finals, 250,000 euros for participation in the final, and 400,000 euros in the event of a final victory.
In a burst of generosity, Julian Nagelsmann’s men have reportedly decided to donate a large portion of their bonuses to the most deprived. Envelopes will be sent to social welfare foundations. A classy gesture from the German players, who will face Denmark this Saturday evening at Iduna Park in Dortmund in the round of 16 of Euro 2024.
