Kent Hughes, the general manager of the Montreal Canadiens, is known for his “picky” and selective approach when it comes to transactions.
Recently, he declined an offer from Daniel Brière, general manager of the Philadelphia Flyers, who offered Cam Atkinson with a large part of his salary paid. This decision once again demonstrates Hughes’s high standards for team management.
With one year left on his contract and a salary of $5.875 million, Atkinson remains a safe bet. But Kent Hughes doesn’t want to know.
Cam Atkinson, who expressed his openness to a transaction in Montreal, categorically refused any idea of going to San Jose.
The Sharks were interested, but San Jose is on his list of 10 teams where he refuses to be traded. Despite this, the Flyers are actively looking to part ways with the veteran forward, a task that appears more complex than expected.
It was TSN hockey reporter Darren Dreger who reported that the San Jose Sharks are interested, but Atkinson doesn’t share that enthusiasm to join the California team.
“The Flyers continue to explore their options regarding veteran Cam Atkinson”Dreger tweeted.
“The Sharks have an interest, but sources say Atkinson is not keen on joining the club. Philadelphia will retain much of the final year of his contract. Repurchase is also an option, as is maintaining it.”
Indeed, Atkinson’s situation is delicate. After a disappointing 2023-2024 season where he scored only 13 goals and amassed 15 assists for a total of 28 points in 70 games, his contract of $5.8 million per season expires next year.
The Flyers’ desire to end their collaboration with Atkinson appears to face several obstacles, including his desire to control his future destination.
The Montreal Canadiens have therefore decided not to seize this opportunity, probably favoring other avenues to improve their alignment in the short term.
Brière would have to offer Hughes a piece of candy for the latter to accept Atkinson’s contract, even if part of his salary is paid.
A hope? A draft pick? Atkinson is unwanted. Brière must pay to get rid of it…
