Romanian fans decided to “challenge” their Ukrainian counterparts during the group match between the two teams, this Monday at Euro 2024 (3-0), by chanting the name of Vladimir Putin. An act that is inevitably very controversial given the geopolitical context, marked by the war led by Russia in Ukraine.

An extremely controversial incident in the stands of the Allianz Arena in Munich. This Monday, during the match between the two teams, counting for the first day of the group stage of Euro 2024 (3-0 victory for Romania), Ukrainian fans chanted the name of Vladimir Putin, president of the Russia.

This provocation comes in a very heavy geopolitical context, marked by the war waged in Ukraine by Russian troops since February 2022.

A flag of the Donetsk People’s Republic, created by Russia in a part of Ukraine that it occupies, was also seen in the Romanian stands.

Match broadcast interrupted due to Russian cyberattack?

This Monday, the broadcast of the meeting was also interrupted in Ukraine shortly after the start of the second half. Local fans denounced a cyberattack by Russia. A hypothesis shared by the private electricity company DTEK, whose power plants have been the target of several Russian attacks.
