Jazz for all tastes this week
Jazz for all tastes this week

Ohas already noted James Brandon Lewis, for a unique date in this Monday November 18 at Château Descas, but the rest of the week promises to be just as busy until Sunday 24. Great standards, traditional jazz, jazz close to rap, electro, African music or composers like Philip Glass or Terry Riley, there will be something for everyone. Quick panorama.

Keyon Harrold at the Grand Poste

Keyon who? This American trumpeter scheduled for Tuesday, November 19, rue du Palais-Gallien, in , is little known, but not the people with whom he played, in jazz (Gregory Porter, Lonnie Smith, etc.) or, above all, in rap and r'n'b: Jay-Z! Beyoncé! Rihanna! Eminem! Keyon Harrold belongs to this generation of jazzmen who grew up with “urban” music before discovering Miles Davis. This is demonstrated by his latest album “Foreverland”, nominated for the Grammy Awards and whose repertoire he will play in Bordeaux, between trumpet and singing (20 to 65 euros).

Tribute to Billie Holiday at the Mercure Hotel

In May 1947, Billie Holiday was sentenced to a year in prison for drug possession. Released in March 1948 for good behavior, she relaunched on the 27th with a triumphant concert at Carnegie Hall. It is this moment that Michel Parmentier (piano), Marc Alibert (guitar), Emmanuel Forster (double bass), Daniel Dumoulin (drums) and Natacha Kanga (vocals) will evoke Friday November 22 at the Mercure hotel in Mérignac. They will play the entire repertoire (including the standards “Strange Fruit” or “I Cover the Waterfront”) in period arrangements (36 euros).

Black Lives at Palmer's Rock

Jacques Schwarz-Bart (tenor sax), Reggie Washington (bass), Sonny Troupé (drums and percussion): three figures of American jazz, also marked by Caribbean music, funk or reggae, who will be heard on Saturday November 23 in . Within the Black Lives collective, they intend to “make the sound of the Black Atlantic heard”, at the crossroads of the United States, the Caribbean, Africa and France. Big names like Pierrick Pédron (alto sax) or Grégory Privat (piano) also appear in this ensemble of 12 musicians, alongside a DJ or a rapper (6 to 28 euros).

Kenny Barron at the Auditorium

He is one of the big names of the L'Esprit du piano festival, and the figurehead of its jazz programming, this Sunday 24 at the Bordeaux auditorium: known for having accompanied legends like Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz, Benny Carter or Ornette Coleman, Kenny Barron, 81, is an all-round pianist, nourished by these collaborations which cover three quarters of the history of jazz. From swing to free, therefore, but with a predilection for bop. We hear echoes of Hank Jones or Oscar Peterson in his playing, but with an elegance, lightness and swing that erase the game's influences (20 to 40 euros, waiting list).

And also…

Kokoroko: a fusion of jazz and afrobeat that delights the London label Brownswood, to be seen on Wednesday November 20 at Rocher de Palmer.

Bigwax

Kokoroko, English afro-jazz Wednesday November 20 at Rocher de Palmer in Cenon (6-26 euros); Gauthier Toux, electro-jazz Friday 22 at Rocher de Palmer (6-21 euros); Cat's Claw, traditional jazz/blues, Saturday at L'Accordeur, in Saint-Denis-de-Pile (10 euros); Mammal Hands, contemporary English jazz Sunday 24 at Rocher de Palmer (6-26 euros).
