Servette FC – FC Zurich (1-1): The Garnet let first place slip away

Neither team was able to win in this clash at the top of the Super League. A balanced match where the Genevans, like the Zurich residents, surrendered in quick succession. Despite this, it is the latter who will remain at the top of the championship during the international break.

What to remember

Servette FC failed to get rid of its Zurich opponent and went on to a third match without a victory. A draw that doesn’t help anyone, especially after FC Lugano’s misstep at Wankdorf. The Servettians missed the opportunity to get ahead of their competitors. They now find themselves in fourth place, 25 points tied with FC Lugano and FC Basel and only a small point behind today’s rivals.

The thread of the match

The Zurich residents, although sometimes threatening, did not seem to have entered the match as well. Indeed, it was Thomas Haberli’s men who controlled the start of the match with possession and the first scoring opportunities in their favor. A highlight for the Grenat, between the 30th and 38th minute, which saw Cognat and Kutesa several times not going far from opening the score.

However, it was indeed FC Zurich who scored first (39th) thanks to a superb long-range shot from Krasniqi. The fault lies with too passive a defense. A few minutes later (45th + 2), just before the break, Timothé Cognat equalized for his team by completing the good work up front by Micha Stevanovic who had lobbed the Zurich defense with a very nice pass.

In the second half, both teams came close to doubling the lead but the scoreboard remained unchanged until the final whistle. A score (1-1) which, over the whole of the game, reflects the nature of the meeting which saw a new entry into play by the young Keyan Varela.

The turning point of the match

Without doubt the first goal of the match. By deceiving the Servetti goalkeeper, Bledian Krasniqi launched the hostilities. From that moment on, the 11,000 spectators at the Stade de Genève were able to see a great show. In the second half, the goals were not there but that in no way made the confrontation boring.

Player of the match

Timothé Cognat. Not only did he score the equalizer, but he was also a real threat throughout the game. Often in a striking position, the French midfielder brought a real offensive dimension to his team.

We will have to wait two weeks, on Sunday November 24 at 4:30 p.m., to see the Servettians play again. A big trip to Basel will await them, facing a team with the same number of points.
