The world of football is in mourning after the sudden death of Matija Sarkic, goalkeeper of the Montenegro national team. At only 26 years oldthe Montenegrin international is died suddenlythis Saturday June 15, 2024.

According to local media, cited by the BBC, Matija Sarkic reportedly collapsed this Saturday morning while he was in his apartment in Budva, Montenegro. Despite the intervention of emergency services, the football player died around 6:30 a.m.

The reasons for his death are not yet known.

His club is “devastated”

On social networks, his English club, Milwall Football Club, published a message in which he said he was “completely devastated to announce that Matija Sarkic has died at the age of 26”.

“Everyone at the club sends their love and condolences to Matija’s family and friends at this extremely sad time. The club will make no further comment at this time and asks that the privacy of Matija’s family be respected,” the club’s statement read.

Matija Sarkic had just finished the international meeting with Montenegro, not qualified for Euro 2024 which has just started. He even played a friendly match last week against Belgium (0-2), during which he performed brilliantly.

The former substitute goalkeeper for Aston Villa and Stoke City joined English club Milwall last August.
