In 2022, the organizers of the Sancerre Trail had to resolve to bring forward the departure times, a few days before the deadline, while the weather forecast predicted peaks of 40 degrees on the afternoon of the race.

From now on, each departure takes place in the morning whereas since 2012 and the inauguration, the departure took place in the afternoon. On June 15, the “magnum” race, 35 kilometers between the vines, started at 8:30 a.m.

“When we have a good date in the calendar, we adapt. Whether it will last, I don’t know, I hope so. But we are in a period of adaptation, we are still in the analysis, the debrief. » Because if the months of July and August are naturally avoided for long-distance races, the months of May and June are widely popular. “June leaves four months for runners to train since the end of February,” argues Franck Bonneau, president of the Cher athletics committee.

If at the end of May the Haut Berry trail in Menetou-Salon was “never bothered by the weather”, as organizer Romain Souchard explains, and still maintained its departure at 3:45 p.m. this year, the month of June can already turn out to be more complicated.

“We have further developed our emergency system,” continues Philippe Georget. We have more advanced posts at remote points, and a system of twelve rescuers, two nurses and a doctor.”

Added to this is the development of refreshment stations, present up to two kilometers from the finish, with misters to cool down.

A similar protocol for the Cher marathon on June 9, where refreshments followed one another every 5 kilometers. “We had planned sponge stands (basin in which to soak a sponge provided, editor’s note), every 2.5 kilometers in case of extreme heat.”

Gyms, stadiums, nautical centers… Bourges’ sports facilities are evolving at the same time as climate change

Beyond these adaptations, preventive actions also govern this type of shopping, where recyclable cups replace plastic bottles and where public transport policies to the start, or even carpooling, are becoming more democratic.
