New stage for the new FC Bruges stadium: the environmental permit has been issued

The stadium which could be built on the new site known as Olympia, to the southwest of Venice of the North, on which the club has set its sights, should be able to accommodate up to 40,000 spectators.

The file linked to the permit application already has fifteen years of history behind it. The Flemish government had already issued a first environmental permit for this project in 2021. But this decision was canceled by the Council of State.

The new Bruges stadium will only host football matches

The High Court had justified the cancellation by the finding of an infringement of the parking regulations of the city of Bruges and by the fact that the complaints of local residents concerning the mobility plan had not been evaluated rigorously enough.

The city of Bruges has in the meantime adapted its parking regulations, which makes it possible to meet the observations of the Council of State, indicated Minister Zual Demir.

The latter is convinced that the project now meets all legal requirements. “Thanks to the limits set, we can also ensure a good balance with the immediate environment,” she commented. The minister is also delighted that Club Bruges is co-investing in urban green spaces.

According to Minister Brouns, the construction of the new stadium offers “great potential for Flemish entrepreneurs to show their know-how to the whole world”. “Commercial activities are limited to a fanshop and a bistro, there will be no shopping center, which protects the existing commercial fabric from the risk of competition,” he said.
