LReal Madrid won their 36th Spanish league title this Saturday. Victorious in Cádiz, the Madrilenians had to hope for a misstep from Barça to validate their title. It was done since the big rival lost 4-2 on the lawn of Girona, who took the opportunity to steal 2nd place in the rankings.

Real are in fact 14 points ahead of Barça, now 3rd, and 13 over Girona, 2nd, with four days remaining.

Andreas Christensen quickly scored for the Blaugranas (3rd) but Girona immediately responded via Ukrainian striker Artem Dovbyk (4th). Robert Lewandowski put his team in front on a penalty (45th + 1) but Portu (65th, 74th) and Miguel Gutierrez (67th) then allowed the surprise team of the season to turn the match around and win. Girona (74 points) takes 2nd place ahead of Barça (73) and will play in the Champions League next season for the first time in its history.

Real had not won La Liga since 2022 and succeeded FC Barcelona. In 2022, Carlo Ancelotti’s players also won the Champions League. They are still in the running to win a fifteenth European crown this season and will play the semi-final second leg against Bayern at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday (first leg: 2-2).
