How does the PTB plan to tax the richest? “We will have FortuneOnWeb”, explains Raoul Hedebouw

Raoul Hedebouw was the guest of the Home Straight, 16 days before the elections. The president of the PTB spoke in particular about one of his flagship measures: the tax on the richest. How would this work in practice?

Taxing the rich is a flagship measure of the PTB. For the Marxist party, are the rich seen as enemies? “I believe that indeed, the multimillionaires, the richest 1% of the population, I believe that it is up to them to pay more today to resolve the crisis and to invest in our economy. And so, indeed, we have a millionaires tax which allows us to resolve this“, justifies the president of the party, Raoul Hedebouw.

How will this work in practice? “It’s like in France with the wealth tax. It’s quite simple, ultimately. Like employees, the super-rich must reintroduce their assets into a program themselves. We have TaxOnWeb for employees, in which everything is already put in advance, by the way. There will be FortuneOnWeb which allows you to declare and afterwards, there would be controls. As for employees“, he replies.

Why do we make a difference between the super-rich and employees?

Raoul Hedebouw says he is “revolted” by the difference in treatment between the “super-rich“and the employees.”Why do we make a difference between the super-rich and employees? That’s what revolts me. Belgium is a tax hell for workers and a tax haven for the super-rich. This is what we need to change“, he argues.

Shouldn’t entrepreneurs fear such a measure? “They must not“, assures Raoul Hedebouw. ”They should not be afraid because we, in fact, impose a tax on wealth, on the super-rich, not for entrepreneurs. What I only want is, at the corporate tax level, for there to be equality between SMEs and multinationals.“, he continues.

The PTB, in my opinion, is really a support for the economy and businesses

Raoul Hedebouw clarifies his point: “An SME will pay 25% tax in Belgium, ok? A multinational, the big debate is to introduce a minimum of 15%. Why such inequality? That’s my problem always with the MR. The MR says that he is the party for the independents and SMEs, but at the same time, he gives lots of gifts to multinationals. This is why the PTB, in my opinion, is really a support for the economy and businesses“, estimates the president of the PTB.
