The Ecuadorian Jhonatan Narváez won the first stage of the Tour of Italy, sprinting past his two breakaway companions, including the Slovenian Tadej Pogacar, on Saturday in Turin.

Narváez (Ineos), already winner of a stage of the Giro in 2020, won at the end of the 140 km ahead of the German Maximilian Schachmann, and Pogacar, 3rd.

The three men escaped in the last difficulty of the stage, three kilometers from the finish.

Swiss further

The only two Swiss entered in this Tour of Italy finished far from the winner. Zurich’s Fabian Lienhard (Groupama-FDJ) finished 120th, at 14’16”, while Vaudois Robin Froidevaux (Tudor Pro Cycling Team) finished 160th, at 14’48”.

Pogacar, big favorite for the event whose finish will be judged on May 26 in Rome at the end of the 21st and final stage, is participating in the Giro for the first time.

He is aiming for the Tour of Italy/Tour de double, a feat which has not been achieved in the same year since 1998 and the Italian Marco Pantani.

Sunday, the 2nd stage is presented as one of the turning points of the event with its arrival at the Oropa sanctuary, at an altitude of 1159 m.
