Rennes overthrows Metz on the edge

Rennes takes its revenge! Beaten on the gong by Brest at the end of an intense and goal-rich Breton derby last weekend, Stade Rennais traveled to the Metz pitch, for the 32nd day of Ligue 1, with only one objective in mind: return to victory to get closer to European qualification at the end of the season. Picked cold by the Garnets on a splendid lob by Mikautadze (1-0, 17th), the Bretons immediately reacted thanks to a twist of fate. By catastrophically repelling a recovery from Gouiri, Hérelle came to deceive his own goalkeeper (1-1, 23rd).

Dominant, Rennes nevertheless paid for its defensive wanderings before the break when Diallo, perfectly launched by Mikautadze, adjusted Mandanda at close range to restore the advantage to Messins (2-1, 45th). It was ultimately thanks to the inevitable Bourigeaud, scorer from the penalty spot, that Rennes came back a second time in this game (2-2, 72nd). In a tense end to the match where Messins and Rennais heated up on numerous occasions, the Breton club overthrew their Lorraine counterpart with a final effort from Kalimuendo, at the conclusion of a lightning counterattack (2-3, 90th+3). With this result, Rennes returns to four points behind Lens, 6th in the standings. Beaten to the wire, Metz remains a barrier, three units behind Nantes which faces Brest this Saturday evening. Next week, the Metz club will have to seek its continuation in Strasbourg without Mikautadze, expelled in added time after a clash with Kalimuendo.
