The 37th day of the Eerste divisie (Dutch D2) experienced a real drama this Friday evening. With one day remaining, Roda JC, 2nd in the ranking, could validate its rise to the 1st division. But it also depends on the FC Groningen , which was playing at the same time. In the event of Groningen’s defeat, Roda JC was assured of promotion to the first division.

Roda hosted Cambuur for this 37th day and scored two goals in the 2nd period. While the score seemed certain for Roda, the fans’ eyes turned to FC Groningen’s trip to Telstar. 3rd in the standings, Groningen was heading towards a defeat when Roda JC’s match was already over.

At 9:54 p.m., Roda’s match ends. Thinking that Groningen have lost, Roda’s supporters invade the pitch and start celebrating. However, at 9:55 p.m., Thom van Bergen equalized in the last moments of the match against Telstar, the party had to be postponed for Roda fans. But it took a few minutes before the information fully reached everyone’s ears. Roda players were still celebrating with the fans, several minutes after the end of the two matches.

In the standings, Roda is ahead of Groningen by three points before the last day of the championship. To top it off, Groningen travels to Roda next Friday. The suspense therefore remains intact.
