“On behalf of the agency, we wanted to highlight all the efforts you made for the inaugural season of the PWHL. We’re super proud of you and I hope you like it.”

This is what his agent Nicola Riopel, president of Propulsion, said when giving him his unique and personalized gift.

No doubt, the goalie loves her custom-made shoes, in the colors of the team in the Professional Women’s Hockey .

“I had already been asked a few questions to find out what my favorite sweater was, which Nike model I liked the most,” says Desbiens in an interview with The newspaper. But I really didn’t know what the shoes were going to look like. It was a nice surprise.”

The result is spectacular with the club logo on the back.

A Quebec artist

It was David Leroux, of RAVI Design (named in honor of his children Raphaël and Victor), who created this little masterpiece.

In videos published on Instagram, you can follow the evolution of the transformation project. We see the former hockey player taking inspiration from the beige and burgundy of the Montreal women’s team, cutting and sewing the fabrics. Then, the artist undoes a pair of Air Jordans that go up to the ankles, dyes the soles and reassembles everything while adding his personal touch.

Leroux was also at the Verdun Auditorium when Desbiens received his gift. She took the opportunity to try them out, taking the break on the ice, sitting on a net or in the stands.

“They are very comfortable, it’s better than high heels!” assures the Charlevoix athlete, who now has exceptional shoes, like Canadian star Cole Caufield and Evgeni Malkin, of the Pittsburgh Penguins, Chris Young and Brad Miller, winners of the World Series in baseball with the Texas Rangers , or the singer Fouki.

The apple of his eye

Desbiens takes care of his shoes. They are well stored in their box, also made by Leroux, on his desk. She put them on for special occasions, like the historic game at the Bell Center, or while taping a sports show on television. No question of dirtying them in slush or Quebec slush.

“These aren’t shoes you necessarily wear to go to the grocery store, I won’t lie. When it rains, I don’t wear them. I choose my moments,” she says.

“It’s also a great showcase for the team’s colors. It’s something unique, so we’re going to see them at events,” promises Desbiens, who isn’t saying no to possibly collaborating with Leroux, who has become especially known in the past for painting goalkeeper masks.
