NHL must bring back 1994 format for playoffs

Since its implementation in 2014, the current NHL playoff format has attracted as much interest as criticism.

This system, which qualifies the top three teams in each division plus two wild cards per conference, was initially intended to strengthen rivalries by increasing the frequency of clashes between the same teams.

However, this objective now seems to be reaching its limits, resulting in redundant and predictable hockey.

The economic reality behind maintaining this format is obviously linked to television rights and logistical considerations, such as transport costs.

Teams like the Florida Panthers and Tampa Bay Lightning benefit greatly from this proximity, minimizing travel and maximizing local media exposure.

That said, this formula considerably disadvantages Canadian teams, notably Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton and Winnipeg, who find themselves geographically isolated.

The current format creates blatant inequality and could be seen as a form of protectionism which favors certain teams to the detriment of sporting fairness.

By persisting with this system, the NHL risks stagnating and losing some of its appeal to fans who aspire to see more varied and unpredictable duels.

A possible solution would be to return to the old system used from 1994 to 2013, where teams were ranked 1 to 8 within their respective conferences, thus promoting a more balanced and dynamic competition.

This would not only renew interest in the series, but also redefine rivalries on more competitive and less predictable bases.

Alternatively, adopting a league-wide 1-16 seeding format could revolutionize the playoffs by providing unique matchups and eliminating geographic disadvantages.

This formula, which has already been successfully tested in the past, would guarantee a renewed and more captivating spectacle, thus stimulating audiences and overall interest in the sport.

It is imperative for the NHL to reconsider its approach in order to preserve the competitiveness and appeal of its playoffs.

Amen!
