Nigeria announces its new coach (official)

The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has finally formalized its new coach, two months after the departure of José Peseiro.

End of suspense. In a press release, the NFF announced its new coach this Monday. The latter is none other than the now ex-interim Finidi George who coached the Super Eagles in March for a mixed record (2-1 victory against Ghana, a first in 18 years, then 2-0 defeat against Mali) .

“The Board of Directors of the Nigeria Football Federation on Monday approved the recommendation of its Technical and Development Committee to appoint former elite winger Finidi George as head coach of the men’s national football team, the Super Eagles”we can read on the official website of the body.

George’s first mission

The former Nigerian international was strongly anticipated in mid-April before rumors announce his compatriot Emmanuel Amunike as the main favorite to succeed José Peseiro. In the end, it didn’t happen. Early choice of the former president of the NFF, Amaju Pinnick, having suggested it to Musa Gusau, George’s mission is to advance the African vice-champions, and in particular with an offensive game.

This will start with the next days of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in June, already crucial, since the Super Eagles are third in their group, two points from first direct qualifying place. “George’s immediate task will be to lead the Super Eagles to victory in two 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against South Africa and Benin Republic, in Uyo and Abidjan respectively, in a little over five weeks”warned the NFF, without however specifying the duration of his contract.
