Around the NHL: News from Victor Hedman, Nick Foligno, and more

Defenseman Victor Hedman was named captain of the Tampa Bay Lightning on Wednesday.

Hedman succeeds Steven Stamkos, who joined the Nashville Predators after signing free agency.

Forward Nikita Kucherov and defenseman Ryan McDonagh will be his assistants.

Hedman signed a four-year, $32 million contract extension in July. This season, he will enter the final year of an eight-year, $63 million contract signed in July 2016.

Hedman had 13 goals and 63 assists in 78 games last season. He added 1 goal and 6 assists in 5 playoff games. The Lightning were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the eventual Stanley Cup winners, the Florida Panthers.

Selected second overall by the Lightning in 2009, Hedman has 156 goals and 572 assists in 1,052 National Hockey League games.

Foligno named Blackhawks captain

Nick Foligno became the 35th captain in the history of the Chicago Blackhawks.

The team made the announcement on the eve of the opening of its training camp.

The Hawks played without a captain last season after the organization cut ties with Jonathan Toews, captain since 2008 and a three-time Stanley Cup winner in the Windy City.

Foligno, who turns 37 on October 31, has quickly become one of the most popular players at the club, which acquired him in June 2023 in a deal with the

Boston Bruins. He served in the role on an alternating basis in his first season with the Blackhawks.

With

With Connor Bedard still only 19 years old, Foligno’s rise to captain seemed natural.

The Blackhawks finished last in the Central Division last season with a 23-53-6 record. The team has been active in free agency this summer and is hoping to complete its rebuilding process.

Foligno, who had 37 points, including 17 goals, in 74 games in his first season in Chicago, agreed in January to a two-year contract that will tie him to the team through the end of the 2025-26 season.

A 17-year NHL veteran, the Senators’ first-round pick in 2006 scored 232 goals and added 330 assists in 1,155 games.

New captain soon for the Sabres

THE

The Buffalo Sabres will name a captain next month when the team begins its regular season in Europe, general manager Kevyn Adams said.

The Sabres have been without a captain since

Kyle Okposo was traded to the Panthers before the last trade deadline. Okposo had worn the “C” since 2022.

The Sabres will play their first two games against the

New Jersey Devils on October 4-5 in Prague, Czech Republic. They will conclude their preseason schedule in Germany against Red Bull Munich on September 27.

The new Sabres captain will become the 21st in team history.

Jack Eichel wore the “C” before Okposo from 2018 to 2021. Rasmus Dahlin and Alex Tuch were Okposo’s assistants last season.
