season 5 is running with incomplete scripts, should we be worried?

All good things must come to an end, including The Boys. The cult program will bow out in 2026 but Prime Video has not said its last word. The main series will be followed by a multitude of spin-offs ready to develop the comic book universe from other angles. While the first spin-off series – Gen V – will launch its second season this year, some spectators are already worried about the grand finale planned for next year. Will the final burst of episodes dedicated to Butcher, Hughie, Homelander and the whole clique manage to conclude the story as it should? Filming has been ongoing since last November, but the showrunner's latest revelations are surprising.

This is part of an interview with the American magazine Forbes that Eric Kripke admitted to working with scripts “only half written“. If there is reason to sound the alarm for fans anxious at the idea of a last minute collapse, the screenwriter and producer wants to be reassuring. The Boys is a series renowned for its inclusion of current affairs themes: a feat which always requires a degree of improvisation.

Season 5 affected by the American election?

If the program has always assumed its political character, the criticism of our society through the prism of superheroes gained intensity during season 4. Eric Kripke says he is proud to have been able to reflect the reality of our world by addressing topics like capitalism, fascism and even corruption. Asked about the election and inauguration of Donald Trump, the showrunner explains having left room in the Season 5 scripts to reflect possible future events and developments. An exercise that the teams got used to from the first season:

“There are things to adjust all the time. This is what happened in the first season, when the 'Me Too' movement broke out in the middle of the season. We had to go back and rethink a lot of things. We are therefore used to this organic evolution of scenarios which always transform a little, depending on what is happening in the world. That doesn't scare us. It's pretty normal. We always rewrite these things until the day before filming, and sometimes the same day.

The main structure of the season nevertheless remains set in stone: “As far as the overall view of the story is concerned, there are no changes. For this final season in particular, the characters need to reach the end of their journey, so these elements have been ready for a while. This season is all about figuring out how to get there, you see. What changes are the discussions between the characters, what is happening in society and the angle of attack of certain jokes. But the essentials remain quite similar.

Everything therefore suggests that The Boys saison 5 will not hesitate to amplify its shock factor and its realism. All that remains is to hope that the broad outlines of the scenario will live up to the (almost) faultless run of the program so far. See you in 2026 for the verdict.
