The use of data has become an essential practice in modern football, and AS Saint-Etienne is no exception. According to Olivier Dall’Ogliothe former coach of the Greens, the data plays a crucial role in the recruitment strategy of the Forézien club, although it is not an end in itself.
The balance between data and human factors
Dall’Oglio emphasizes the importance of finding a balance between the use of data and the human factor. “DATA is part of the evolution of football. We have to find a balance. DATA can help us, but people must remain the priority. The pitch will remain the goal.” Although data provides valuable information, human experience and judgment remain essential in the decision-making process.
Data, a recruitment support tool
The former Saint-Etienne coach explains that data is widely used in the recruitment process at the ASSE. “We also use DATA a lot for recruitment. But it must be combined with humans.” Data allows you to obtain maximum information on potential recruits, but it must be supplemented by human evaluationsin particular by exploiting networks to know the environment and backgrounds of players.
Adversary analysis made easy
Beyond recruitment, data is also used to analyze opponents. “We use DATA and video to analyze adversaries”says Dall’Oglio. This approach allows the technical team to better prepare matches and adapt strategies according to the opponent’s strengths and weaknesses.
