FIFA would seriously consider introducing a major innovation in the world of Football: Football Video Support (FVS), a system allowing coaches to challenge certain refereeing decisions, with an operation similar to the “challenge” in basketball or tennis. Thanks to this system, coaches could request (at least) two video reviews per match for contested actions. Approved by the IFAB in March, the FVS has already been tested at the recent Under-17 and Under-20 Women's World Cups, and the initial feedback is encouraging.
Tests soon?
The next step is for FIFA to present a detailed report to the Board, which will decide on a possible extension of the tests. This system is already arousing certain interest in several leagues who have volunteered to participate in the experiment. However, Pierluigi Colina, now head of the FIFA referees committee, recalls an important nuance: “ However, it is essential to understand that FVS is not VAR. Because due to the low number of cameras used, the FVS will not be able to show what the VAR can show. » The FVS would therefore offer a contest tool to coaches, without guaranteeing the precision of the VAR.
