Qualified for the first 32-team Club World Cup in history, to be held in 2025 in the United States, PSG will know their opponents for the group stage in early December, the date of the draw having finally been announced .
Despite strong opposition, the new Club World Cup dear to Gianni Infantino is taking shape. After announcing its first official partner for the competition, with the Chinese brand Hisense, and revealing the 12 stadiums in the United States which will host the 63 matches of the event from June 15 to July 13, 2025, FIFA announced this Monday the date of the group stage draw.
Club World Cup draw date set
The draw for the Club World Cup will take place on Thursday December 5, 2024 in Miami and will start from 7 p.m. in France (1 p.m. local time). The draw will be broadcast live on the FIFA website, as well as on other platforms which remain to be confirmed since the competition has still not found a broadcaster at the time of writing.
Already 31 teams out of 32 qualified for the 2025 Club World Cup
In total, 32 teams will participate in this new Club World Cup (see list at the end of the article), including PSG and 11 other European teams. 31 teams have already qualified for the competition and the 32nd will be known on November 30 as it will be the winner of the Copa Libertadores final between two Brazilian clubs: Atlético Mineiro and Botafogo (owned by John Textor).
FIFA also recently confirmed the participation of Lionel Messi in the competition as the host country's representative. In addition to having the Argentine star in its squad, Inter Miami finished first in the MLS regular season, which explains their qualification for this Club World Cup.
What format for the competition?
Concerning the format of this new competition, it is quite simple with a first phase of 8 groups of 4 teams. Each team plays the three opponents in its group once, like in a World Cup, and the top two teams from each group advance to the round of 16.
There is then a single-match knockout stage, from the round of 16 to the final, with no third-place match. We do not yet know what the constraints will be concerning the countries or continents for the group stage, but we imagine that FIFA will ensure that 4 countries from the same continent or the same country are not in the same band.
Several former Parisians at the Club World Cup
Several former PSG players, and not the least, will normally play in this Club World Cup next summer if they are not injured and have not changed clubs by then. There is therefore Lionel Messi (Inter Miami), but also Kylian Mbappé (Real Madrid), Neymar (Al Hilal), Edinson Cavani (Boca Juniors), Angel Di Maria (Benfica), Thiago Silva (Fluminense) or even Kinglsey Coman ( Bayern Munich).
