After the narrow victory of women’s PSG against Nantes (1-0), supporters perhaps expected a more critical reaction from Fabrice Abrielas the performance was deemed insufficient. However, the Parisian coach surprised everyone by remaining measured, contenting himself with emphasizing the importance of the three points, despite the disappointing quality of play.
In his post-match statements, speaking to Canal+, Abriel insisted on the fact that the victory, although difficult, made it possible to accumulate essential points for the rest of the championship. “I am very happy with the result in terms of points, because you have to accumulate them, it gives you confidence”he said. A pragmatic approach which seems to favor efficiency rather than manner, to the great dismay of those who were hoping for a more scathing criticism of the content.
He nevertheless recognized the weaknesses of his team, particularly with regard to collective technical mastery. “We can do much better in certain phases of the game”he admitted. PSG showed signs of excitement, especially in the second half, where Nantes took advantage of the spaces and almost came back to score on several occasions. “We exposed ourselves to a comeback from Nantes, whether from set pieces or during good phases of play”he added, emphasizing, however, the defensive solidity which made it possible to maintain the goal in advance.
Abriel also mentioned the importance of the work ahead: “This will give us something to work on for the coming week.” Aware of his team’s flaws, he pointed out the loss of technical balls and the lack of fluidity in the face of opposing pressure. “The game freezes, there is less movement, and sometimes a certain period of doubt sets in.”he explained, suggesting that the mentality of his players would be an area for improvement.
Finally, Abriel wanted to recognize the merit of the Nantes women, who posed unexpected difficulties for PSG. “They offered us a challenge that pushed us very far”he said, before concluding that the use of the five changes had been necessary to maintain balance.
If this victory allows us to stay the course, it is obvious that PSG will not be able to be satisfied with such a level of play against more formidable teams. Abriel, while seeking to remain positive, will have to quickly rectify the situation so that the season does not turn into a succession of lackluster victories.
