The summer transfer window was rather positive at OM with the signings of players such as Greenwood, Hojbjerg and Rabiot. But this is not enough to aim for the title according to Marcel Desailly, who expects more from Frank McCourt.
The start of the Olympique de Marseille season caused a certain excitement among the supporters of the Marseille club, so much so that the title was mentioned. The last two matches delivered by Roberto De Zerbi’s team calmed everyone down, with a defeat in Strasbourg and a disappointing draw against Angers at the Vélodrome. With one point from the last two matches, OM are now three points behind PSG and five points behind Monaco. Nothing is lost but for the title, it risks being right and it is not Marcel Desailly who will say the opposite.
Questioned by RMC, the former defender of Olympique de Marseille and the French team believes that the transfer window carried out by Pablo Longoria and Frank McCourt last summer will not allow Roberto De Zerbi’s team to aim for the title. For the 1998 world champion, it is necessary to recruit stars of more confirmed standing in order to achieve bigger goals. In other words, Frank McCourt must drop a little more money if he wants his club to finally be able to compete with PSG, as he has wanted since 2016.
Desailly calls for stars from OM
“OM’s recruitment was good. The Marseille leaders know how to do things well, with the budget allocated by their owner, which I really appreciate. Now, from the moment you don’t take first choice international players with experience, what happens is that you have players who are at 150% and who suddenly then goes to fault. Some players who do not necessarily have the caliber to play for OM are in overdrive. When you play in Marseille, you have to be a first choice in the national team, and that is never the case at OM. Longoria makes good moves, but rarely first choices with players who can handle the pressure in Marseille” launched Marcel Desailly on Marion Bartoli’s show on RMC.
Still, in Frank McCourt’s camp, it is estimated that the American owner has already done his part by accepting big transfers this summer such as those of Greenwood or Wahi, two transfers which exceed 25 million euros. It is now up to Roberto De Zerbi to make good use of this squad and guide it to the highest level. Hoping that the Italian coach is able to work miracles, with a title that remains in the back of the supporters’ minds.
