WhatsApp is preparing a little new thing. It turns out that reverse image search is in development for their communications application. Their beta testers already have access to it.

A game changer

WhatsApp is in the kitchen. They are currently testing a new feature that should help combat scams. This functionality is none other than reverse image search. A method that allows you to find the origin of an image in record time.

However, to access this functionality, you generally have to download the image in question, then run it through a search engine. Google has been capable of this for quite some time, but it must be recognized that if Whatsapp is your main communication tool, being able to use reverse image search directly from your app of choice would be much more convenient.

And precisely, thanks to this update, reverse image search will be possible via Whatsapp. No need to exit the application to perform this maneuver. All you have to do is press the three dots located at the top right of an image you have received, and select the option: “Search the web.” As it turns out, the feature is currently in the hands of a few users.

To combat misinformation

Some WhatsApp beta testers may spot this. As for the functionality itself, it is able to determine if an image has been manipulated, or taken out of context. Important in an age where misinformation spreads like wildfire. Messaging platforms are particularly sensitive to this problem. This goes without saying, but image verification is about more than just the ones you receive. It would be wise to also include the ones you send, to be sure that you are not yourself a source of misinformation.

It is important to note that this new feature is entirely optionaland will not activate without your permission. It’s up to users whether they want to use it to share an image with Google to get additional information. Additionally, although the image is uploaded to Google for search, it is never shared or processed by WhatsApp itself.

Only users registered for the beta version of Whatsapp have access to this feature at the moment. However, it should be deployed over the coming months for all users of the application. Places are limited, but it is possible to test Whatsapp’s reverse image search by registering for the Whatsapp beta.
