John Souttar shared how Rangers are “desperate” to get back on track after the 4-1 loss against Lyon on Thursday 3 October.

The Gers suffered a humiliating defeat at Ibrox in the Europa League as Malick Fofana and Alexandre Lacazette scored braces after Tom Lawrence scored a short-lived equaliser in the first half.

Souttar revealed to the Daily Record [4 October] that the Light Blues are determined not to let the midweek result derail their momentum in the Scottish Premiership.

He said: “I think any club in the world is going to have bad nights and good nights and it is how you respond. I am positive we have got a group in there who will respond.

“It is one night. We were not at our best. We can’t let it affect us going forward. We need to bounce back and we need to do that Sunday.

“I think the boys will just be desperate to bounce back, so whatever the kick-off was, we will just be looking forward to that.”

Rangers face tough fight on all fronts this season

The result on Thursday is set to have significant ramifications on Rangers’ hopes of a successful season with daunting tasks now facing Philippe Clement on both the domestic and European stages.

Clement must bridge a five-point gap to catch Celtic and Aberdeen at the top of the Scottish Premiership, the side needs to be perfect before travelling to Pittodrie on 30 October all while juggling a tricky European fixture schedule.

Rangers still have fixtures to play against Tottenham and Manchester United, if the result against Lyon is anything to go by then the Light Blues are in for seriously tricky evenings against clubs south of the border with unthinkable resources at their disposal.

Worse of all, the return of a full-capacity Ibrox has brought more harm than good with Rangers set to feel the wrath of UEFA [Bill Leckie] for a small section of supporters setting off fireworks in the stadium during the first half.

The Gers produced their worst performance thus far and lacked leadership against Lyon, suggestions that the club could go toe-to-toe with the European elite in the Champions League now look laughable, perhaps Dynamo Kyiv did Clement a favour.
