Zurich-based startup Swiss-Mile has raised $22 million to develop its autonomous robots, with the support of Jeff Bezos and Amazon’s industrial fund.

Swiss-Mile, which specializes in AI-powered robots, announced that it has raised $22 million in a first round of funding led by Jeff Bezos via Bezos Expeditions and HongShan. Amazon’s industrial innovation fund also participated in this financing.

Founded in April 2023 and based in Zurich, Swiss-Mile has set itself the mission of creating truly autonomous robots to take on various tedious tasks. A spin-off from the ETH Zurich Robotics Systems Laboratory, the company aims to tackle the most complex challenges in mobility, autonomy and object manipulation. The company highlights that it has already successfully conducted pilot projects for last-mile deliveries and the security of critical infrastructures.

Swiss-Mile develops legged and wheeled robots powered by neural networks. By integrating reinforcement learning and supervised learning into a unified framework, the company equips its robots with the ability to learn autonomously from scratch and adapt to real-life deployments. The capabilities of the startup’s robots are continuously refined using data collected in real-world environments and virtual scenarios.

“The Swiss-Mile team builds innovative, real-world solutions using embodied AI and robotics, bringing their expertise to diverse industries. We […] “We are delighted to support their team, recognising the potential that these technologies represent for Amazon,” said Franziska Bossart, head of Amazon’s Industrial Innovation Fund.
