Title holder and world no. 1, Jannik Sinner was merciless with Alex De Minaur (ATP 8) in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open. The Italian will face Ben Shelton (ATP 20) in the semi-final. The American had previously escaped the Lorenzo Sonego (ATP 55) trap 6-4 7-5 4-6 7-6.

No suspense in this last quarter-final, which saw Jannik Sinner literally walk on his Australian opponent. Even the Melbourne crowd, who came en masse to support De Minaur, quickly died down. The “regional of the stage” only lasted half a set, the first, before being dominated in all areas of the game. He will therefore not experience his first semi-final yet this month in Grand Slam.

Sinner, for his part, continues on his merry way. After the scares of his round of 16 against Holger Rune (dizziness, tremors, etc.), the world No. 1 was literally ruthless with his opponent. We never thought we would see him able to get bogged down by De Minaur’s weak tennis. The Italian will therefore meet Friday with Ben Shelton at the Rod-Laver Arena, after the first semi-final between Alexander Zverev and Novak Djokovic.

A 2nd half for Shelton

By dominating Lorenzo Sonego on the Rod-Laver Arena at the end of a fairly exciting end to the match, Shelton offered himself, at 22 years old, his second accession to a major semi-final after that (lost) of 2023 at the US Open.

The 29-year-old Italian, who was playing his first Grand Slam quarter-final, offered a long resistance to the American, but he lacked realism at the end of this meeting of almost 4 hours.

Faller of Stan Wawrinka in the 1st round, Sonego will surely regret his failed end of the 2nd round and his errors at the end of the 4th, without which he would certainly have taken Shelton into a 5th set full of dangers.
